But Wing paid Selby the highest compliment one cop ever gives another: "He was just the kind of guy you'd want to go through the door with. As a young deputy, Selby unwittingly found his own notoriety. The entry-level officers testified they were told the contributions were the way to get hired. His sacrifice on behalf of this community - and especially its children - provides a reminder that officers such as Selby stand as the community's first line of defense against some of its most sinister assailants.

The death toll from violence related to drug trafficking in Memphis is heartbreaking. Eight other people, including five other children, were wounded in the melee.

The shooting death of 9-year-old Marrqutte Mason last May in Orange Mound also was the unintended result of a dispute over drugs, according to testimony by the intended victim. Similar circumstances surrounded the shooting death of year-old Damien Woodard as he crouched beneath a tree on a playground near his home during a gun battle last April, and the critical wounding of Ashlee Thomas, 10, in a drive-by shooting last June. The behavior of gangsters who show such disregard for human lives - even their own - makes the law enforcement role played by Selby and other officers who confront the menace all the more dangerous and valuable.

Selby was engaged in combating the equivalent of a squad of suicide bombers, Herman Ewing, president and chief executive of the Memphis Urban League, observed. We can never repay the enormous debt we owe to officers such as Deputy Selby.
